The meeting

February 18th, 2011 No comments

The car ride to and from school is always the best time to have interesting discussions with Nico.  This time, on the way home today I was just listening:

Mommy: “Nico, how was your day today?”
Nico: (silence)
Mommy: “Why don’t you say anything?”
Nico: “I don’t want to talk.”
Mommy: “Why not?”
Nico: (silence)
Mommy: “Why not, Nico?”
Nico: “I’m in a meeting with my brain.” (his exact words :))

A few minutes later…

Nico: “You know, you shouldn’t argue with adults because they do everything so you don’t get sick.”
Mommy: How so?
Nico: “Because they make the money to buy food to eat so you don’t get sick.”
Mommy: “Did you learn this in school? Who told you this?”
Nico: “God told me because he made my brain. So God told me.”

I hope one of these days I get invited to Nico’s meeting with his brain.  There seem to be interesting discussions going on at these meetings.

Spider-Boy

This evening, Nico decided to show us his Spider-Man skills.

He climbed up by himself and maintained that position until I took the photo.  And then he simply jumped down right afterwards.

The Thinker

February 16th, 2011 No comments

Following a comment by Samir about the “Nico series” and by Peter about Nico having his own blog, I’ve decided that from now on I’ll try to to put more effort into chronicling the various things Nico will say and/or do.

Nico is a very smart and funny 5-year-old boy.  If he had his own reality TV show I’m sure it would be a lot of fun to watch. Everyday there’s always something he says or does that puts a smile on my face. 🙂

Apparently, Nico is also very thoughtful.  On the way home today after picking him up from school I noticed that Nico was very quiet in the car:

Me: “Nico, are you tired?”
Nico: “No, I’m thinking.”
Me: “What are you thinking about?”
Nico: “Daddy, you’re disturbing my thinking.”

Shame on me. One should never disturb a thinker when he’s thinking. 🙂

The birds and the bees

February 15th, 2011 No comments

I had an interesting discussion (again) with Nico (5yo) this morning. I don’t remember all the exact words but it more or less went like this:

Nico: “Daddy, am I Thai?”
Me: “No, but you’re part Thai. You’re half Finnish, 1 quarter Thai and 1 quarter Filipino.”
Nico: “I’m not all Filipino?”
Me: “No, just 1 quarter.”
Nico: “How do you know?”
Me: “Well, how you are depends on who your parents are.”
Nico: (not really listening to me) “Ah, it’s because you were born earlier than me so you’re older and you know more.”
Me: “Yes, I was born before you but you’re like that because Daddy’s half-Thai and half-Filipino. And Mommy’s Finnish. So you’re a combination of us because we made you.”
Nico: “You made me? Like when people make toys and cars and stuff?”
Me: “Not really like that but Mommy and Daddy made you.”
Nico: “No, Mommy made me because I came from her tummy.”
Me: “Well yes, but Daddy helped too.”
Nico: “How did you help?”
Me: (after a pause to think) “Daddy’s blood mixed with Mommy’s blood and that eventually became you.
Nico: “Did Reko help too? He was also there before me, right?” (Reko is Nico’s older brother)
Me: “No, Reko didn’t help. It was just Mommy’s and Daddy’s blood.”
Nico: (after a short pause) “But Daddy, how did you mix your blood with Mommy’s blood?”
Me: “Oh look, we’re at the school now. We can continue this discussion later.”

As I was having this conversation with Nico, I could already see myself in slow motion digging my own grave deeper and deeper. I was very lucky that we arrived at the school when we did.

Most likely, Nico will forget about the conversation and hopefully I won’t have to have this talk with him for another 10 years. There’s a chance he’ll remember though and will start bugging me about it. What do I say?

I never had this discussion with my own parents. Also, I never went to Daddy School so I missed the lecture on “How to explain to your child about the birds and the bees.” Perhaps someone with more experience can give some advice?

Nico is 5, Sofia is 7

June 9th, 2010 1 comment

Nico turned 5 today and had his birthday celebration at HopLop with some of his classmates. It was nice to see the kids run around and have fun.  Nico was particularly happy about receiving lots of Bakugan.  He now has more than a dozen of them.  Anyway, time certainly flies.  After summer he starts kindergarten and then it’s just 2 more years before he goes to school.

Speaking of school, Sofia turn 7 last week and she’ll be starting 1st grade in a couple of months.  Our little princess is growing up.  On her birthday, she wore a beautiful dress and received her first flowers from a boy.  I think Petra posted some photos on Facebook.

Half a year later…

…I finally get around to adding back all the photos. I didn’t realize there were so many! Unfortunately, all the titles and captions are gone but at least most, if not all, the photos are there.

Back to square one

December 11th, 2009 8 comments

Bad news.  It appears that the web host provider we’ve been using for the past 5-6 years has gone belly up.  All of a sudden the website was down, I had no access to the account and support was unreachable.  Somehow, I knew this day was coming but I didn’t realize it would come so soon and without warning.

Unfortunately, I have no recent backup so it’s a lot easier to just start over.  That means though that pretty much all the posts since the beginning are lost.  I have, however, been able to backup most of the photos.  I’ll start adding them back but it’ll take some time to complete.  Those of you were were previously registered will need to register again.

My sincere apologies to all our family and friends who’ve been posting on and following the website.
